The year of 2016 has brought the country many stories of teams that have broken decade-long sports droughts. The Lady Panthers volleyball team joined this exclusive club by winning 3-1 against Miami Dade College’s Lady Shark volleyball team to become Division 1 Southern Conference champions.
The team won the championship behind a 22-4 season, which is the best season in Lady Panther volleyball history. The team also posted a dominant 7-1 record in intra-conference play and an unbeaten record at home with five wins to zero losses.
Lyndzey Minter, a Lady Panthers outside hitter, had plenty to say about her team’s historic season. Her expectations for this season were high, but she admits that the team exceeded them. Minter credits “team effort and filling individual roles” as the main reason for the team achieving the amount of success that they enjoyed this season.
Minter believes that this win “will be one to remember because this has never happened in school history.” Minter’s expectations for the team are even higher for next season. She is adamant that the team will surpass the greatness they accomplished this season and will qualify for nationals.
The immediate future of the Lady Panthers volleyball team is extremely bright due to their young talent. Six of the fifteen players on the roster this season are first-year students, with Minter being one of them. This will lead to another year of chemistry, athletic progression, and an opportunity to mentor next year’s freshman class so our Lady Panthers may become better players, and hopefully, champions once again.
